Montane forests occur between the alpine tundra and the lower altitude grasslands. Their trees grow large and are interspersed with aspen groves, evergreens and plants that thrive in the partial shade of the large trees. Food, water and shelter sources are plentiful here and many different species of animals thrive in the diversity (Wikipedia).
